Farewell to Marie Elizabeth Sushka: Scholar, Mentor, and Friend of HEC
Farewell to Marie Elizabeth Sushka: Scholar, Mentor, and Friend of HECIt is with deep sadness that we learned that Marie Elizabeth Sushka, Professor of Finance at the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, passed away on Saturday April 5, 2025.

An internationally recognized scholar in the fields of banking, financial markets, corporate governance, and private equity, Professor Sushka authored five books and published more than fifty articles in peer-reviewed journals, including the most prestigious in the field. She was among the most productive female scholars in financial economics and became full professor in 1984, at a time when female full professors in finance were exceedingly rare. A true pioneer and inspiration.
During the last twenty-five years, Marie and her husband Professor Myron Slovin regularly visited the HEC Finance Department as Distinguished Visiting Research Scholars. Throughout the years, Marie and Myron have made a profound and enduring contribution to our community—not only through their outstanding academic work, but also through Marie’s remarkable generosity in mentoring young HEC professors. Her guidance helped shape them into accomplished scholars, strengthening HEC’s international reputation, and leaving a lasting legacy.
Our thoughts are with her husband Myron.
